The Best Ingredients for Adult Acne

Adult acne is different from teenage acne. It often appears alongside sensitive skin, dehydration or the first signs of ageing, so harsh treatments can leave your skin feeling worse. The goal is to reduce breakouts while maintaining a healthy skin barrier.

Salicylic Acid (BHA)

Salicylic acid is one of my favourite ingredients for acne-prone skin. It penetrates deep into pores to dissolve excess oil and dead skin cells, helping to reduce blackheads, congestion and breakouts.

Glycolic Acid (AHA)

Glycolic acid exfoliates the skin's surface, helping to improve skin texture, reduce post-blemish marks and encourage healthy skin renewal. It can be a great choice for adult acne, particularly if you're also concerned about signs of ageing.

Polyhydroxy Acids (PHAs)

PHAs offer gentle exfoliation while helping to support hydration, making them an excellent option for sensitive or mature skin. They smooth the skin, improve texture and help keep pores clearer without the irritation that stronger acids can sometimes cause.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a true multitasker. It helps regulate excess oil, calms redness, strengthens the skin barrier and can reduce the appearance of post-acne marks. It's suitable for most skin types and works well alongside other active ingredients.

Peptides

Although peptides don't treat acne directly, they help support skin repair and are ideal if you're managing both breakouts and the early signs of ageing.

Protect Your Skin

Daily sunscreen is essential. UV exposure can worsen post-inflammatory pigmentation and many exfoliating ingredients increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun.

A Gentle, Consistent Approach

I don't recommend relying on harsh treatments to clear acne. Adult skin usually responds better to a balanced routine that combines effective ingredients with good barrier support. With consistency and the right products, you can achieve clearer, healthier-looking skin without unnecessary irritation.

Zinc

Zinc is a valuable ingredient for acne-prone skin. It helps calm inflammation, supports the skin's natural healing process and can help reduce excess oil production. It's particularly useful for adult acne, where the aim is to control breakouts without over-drying or irritating the skin. Zinc also works well alongside ingredients such as niacinamide and salicylic acid, making it an excellent addition to a balanced skincare routine.

Take a Holistic Approach

Skincare is only one part of managing adult acne. Factors such as stress, sleep, hormones and diet can all influence your skin.

While there isn't a single diet that works for everyone, some people notice improvements by reducing foods that trigger their breakouts and by eating a balanced diet rich in whole foods. Managing stress, getting enough sleep and staying hydrated can also support healthier skin.

The best results usually come from combining an effective skincare routine with healthy lifestyle habits. If your acne is persistent, severe or affecting your confidence, it's important to seek advice from a healthcare professional, as prescription treatment may sometimes be needed.

Professional Treatments

If home skincare isn't enough, professional treatments can help improve adult acne. One option I often recommend is Dermalux LED phototherapy.

The blue light helps target acne-causing bacteria, while other wavelengths can reduce inflammation, support healing and improve the skin's overall health. Dermalux is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that can be used alongside a personalised skincare routine to help achieve clearer, healthier-looking skin.

The most effective treatment plan will depend on your skin type, the severity of your acne and any underlying factors contributing to your breakouts.
